PEOPLE are being given the chance to see Northumbrian Water’s [pounds]5m plans to replace part of its sewer network before work begins at the end of next month.
The company will replace a section of network between Loftus and Skinningrove, and plans to build three new pumping stations for the area.
Drop-in sessions have been organised in Loftus, Liverton Mines and Skinningrove this week for people to see the plans.
Project manager Ian Davison said: “The sewer serving Easington, Liverton Mines, Loftus and Skinningrove runs along the banks of, and in some locations in, Loftus, Whitecliff and Kilton becks.
“In times of heavy rainfall, the pipe, which is in a poor condition and will be abandoned, cannot cope with the amount of stormwater, which has resulted in pollution.
“The work will also prevent water from watercourses getting into the sewerage network, which puts the system under unnecessary pressure and results in inefficient waste water treatment.
“The risk of the new sewer pipe being exposed to damage is unlikely and it will also be much easier and safer to access for maintenance than the existing pipe.”
The new sewer will be installed along New London Road, the rear of Downe Street, St Georges Terrace (North), Station Road (B1366), Westfield Terrace, Coronation Road, Deepdale Lane, through Deepdale Woods to the A174 and along Mill Lane.
The three pumping stations will be on land west of Hirds Drive, Loftus, off St Georges Terrace (North), near the railway at Liverton Mines and on land at the rear of Downe Street, Liverton Mines.
Redcar and Cleveland borough councillor Mary Lanigan said: “The council will work closely with Northumbrian Water to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.
“The existing network is in poor condition and the work is necessary to ensure the likelihood of pollution in the area is significantly reduced.”
The B1366 between St George’s Terrace, Liverton Mines and The Station Hotel, in Loftus, will be closed from mid-May next year for about eight weeks.
Construction traffic will need to access working sites and the main site compound on the small industrial estate in Lantsberry Drive, south of Liverton Mines.
The drop-in sessions will take place from 2pm to 7pm in the following venues: Today, Loftus Town Hall; tomorrow Liverton Mines village hall;
and on Thursday in the Riverside Buildings, in Skinningrove.
